persecution of school teacher
-responsibilities in action
As the Red Guards began to persecute the intellectuals, school teachers became one of the biggest targets of the Red Guards. Proletarian youths who entered better schools, as a beneficiary of the revolution, had more reason to take Communist promises of a good future for the working class. However, they later realized that “these schools’ educational system were more for the bourgeoisie children and felt humiliated” (Israel, The Red Guard in Historical Perspective). Many teachers were accused by the Red Guards of not following Mao’s visions, but little had enough evidence to prove their accusations. They hung heavy boards on the teachers’ necks and write their names in red ink. They force the teachers to wear high hats and kneel before the them. They strike them with clubs harshly. Bian Zhongyun, who was a long time teacher at the Beijing Teacher University Girls Middle School, was among the first to be beaten to death because she was in a party that was labeled by the Red Guards as Counter-Revolutionary Revisionists.
The uncontrollable violence expanded to younger teachers quickly. In late August at the birth place of the Red Guard, Qinghua University Middle School, a twenty-six year old teacher committed suicide by jumping from the school’s chimney after an entire evening’s persecution and insult. In a Middle School in Tianjin, students put garbage bags on the teachers’ heads, and shaved the female teachers’ heads.
Even at this stage of outrage, the Red Guards kept torturing elders without a sense of guilt. All of the persecutions were
worth it in the Red Guards eyes because they had faith in
Mao. They believed the persecution of the teachers to be their responsibilities.
